Every CCD camera produces a certain amount of dark current, which accumulates in the pixels during an exposure. The dark current is produced by heat, and is a source of noise in images. The noise results from randomness in the dark current and pixel-to-pixel variations in the amount of dark current. The pixel-to-pixel variations in dark current can be removed by subtracting a dark frame, but the associated noise cannot be removed.
