Analog to Digital converter Unit. The CCD detector outputs a voltage representing how many electrons were detected on a particular pixel. This voltage is amplified and filtered and then passed to an Analog to Digital Converter, which turns the voltage into a number. That number is measured in ADUs. If you multiply by the Gain, also known as Photoelectrons per ADU, you will get the number of electrons detected by the pixel.
